OJL : Hello Marjorie
Marjorie : Hello.

OJL : Four quick questions before getting to the heart of the matter.
As you live in Lignan-sur-Orb, can you tell us what your favourite café is there ? And what do you like to take there ?
Marjorie : I don’t usually go to coffee shops. I like to drink my tea quietly at the morning in my garden.
And when, in the evening, I go out with my friends, I usually have a beer. Moreover, at the local level we find more and more artisan brewers. But I don’t have any favourite places. I like to change.

OJL : And what is your favourite park or place ?
Marjorie : I like pretty wild places. I have a lot of fun walking in the forest towards the Caroux or the upper cantons but I also like walking on the beach of Vendres.
These walks are an opportunity for me to get inspired but also to collect what I call “my little treasures” (feathers, stones, plants, flowers, shells, etc…).
These are used by me to highlight my illustrations for my publications on the networks and/or to create decorative objects.

OJL : Next, what was the last book you read ? And the last song you listened to ?
Marjorie : _Regarding to the book: I am reading “Third Eye and Pineal Gland” by Sarah Stulzaft. It is not a novel but a book between myth and science about this small part of the brain which is the seat of our intuition and the source of our inspiration ! The author teaches us how to take care of it.
_Regarding to the song: “Ivar’s revenge” by Danheim. I listen to more and more Nordic music.

OJL : Finally, do you have a quote and/or proverb that you like ?
Marjorie : “Those who don’t believe in magic will never see it…” by Roald Dahl, British writer famous for his book “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” (1964).

OJL : Let’s talk a little about you now. How could you introduce yourself ?
Marjorie : I am Marjorie, I like to paint and draw nature with poetry and a bit of magic. Self-taught, I found my style through a passion that has never left me. Curious by nature, I regularly test and experiment with new techniques that I enjoy combining later. I don’t think I’ll have enough of a lifetime to try everything I want… I also give workshops to help unlock people’s creativity through paintings and collages. Because I am convinced, there is an artist who needs to express himself in each of us. I have fully launched into the artistic adventure since 2021. And today I finally feel in my place.

OJL : Who are the artists who shaped you ? Who struck you down ? In a few names and why.
Marjorie : Without hesitation Gustav Klimt ! I admire his style (daring for the time), his way of painting women between ornamentation, patterns and gilding.
Also Frida Kahlo. For her raw and colourful works.
I have also always been fascinated by the illustrations in children’s books. But in this specific case, the list would be far too long (smile).

OJL : In your case, can we talk about a pseudonym ? Have you looked for one ?
Marjorie : This is just my real name and my real first name (laughs). After searching for a pseudonym for a long time, nothing finally came to mind. I had an idea but to my great disappointment, it was already taken… Ultimately what was most original was keeping my first and last name. However I often shorten “Marjorie” to “Marjo”.

OJL : Let’s talk a little about your work now. What are you creating ?
Marjorie : I have two favourite subjects: women and trees,… well I admit three… Birds too (laughs).
I paint my women with big, wavy hair that tells a story.
I don’t limit myself to a single technique, I can mix acrylic, collage of old paper, ink, watercolour… My works are defined gradually. Starting a painting is for me an adventure whose destination I do not know.
From time to time when I want to do something other than painting, I create small objects like textile bags, light catcher mobiles with owls and crystal tassels but also decorations for Christmas trees.

OJL : How can you define your style ?
Marjorie : I would say it is poetic. Quite simply.

OJL : What techniques do you use ?
Marjorie : Acrylic, gouache, collage, watercolour, ink and linocut. I am not at all attracted to digital and digital creation, I need the contact with my tools and the paper.

OJL : Can we place you a personalized order?
Marjorie : Exactly, I am soon thinking of offering personalized portraits in my “hairy and natural” style. To be continued….

OJL : Great idea ! And do you have any other projects you can tell us about ?
Marjorie : In the future, I plan to create my own paints using plant or vegetable pigments to complete my approach. But it is more complicated than it seems… The resistance of colours to light is an important constraint to take into account.
Currently, I am preparing the illustrations for a calendar for 2024, I am drawing a series of “bird women” over the months.
This is the third year that I have proposed a calendar, the first was on astrological signs, the second on the trees of life. This is a collaboration with my writer friend (Marie, mentioned below) who is responsible for decorating the calendar with inspiring text for the month. Then the calendars are printed by a local professional.

OJL : Why birds?
Marjorie : I have a certain fascination for these animals, they represent messengers for me, a bit like trees, they form the link between sky and earth.

OJL: What are your favourite trees and plants ?
Marjorie : _About the trees, I like all those found in forests. I love ferns, oaks and beeches which often become majestic. I am also fascinated by the people of the forest: foxes, owls, deer, squirrels etc…
_About the plants, I like dandelion, for its sunny side. And once faded, I continue to love it for its very airy side. I also love roses and citrus flowers for their scents.
As for indoor plants, I have a preference for begonias, with their graphic foliage and generous flowering.
Besides, I have a lot of plants at home. But you must have suspected that, right ? (wink).

OJL : Can we subscribe to your newsletter ?
Marjorie : I don’t have one yet. Instagram is currently the place where I communicate the most.

OJL : Do you have an anecdote about the creation of one of your products ? Or one of your sales ?
Marjorie : I remember painting a woman holding a fox in her arms and then once finished I published it. A friend of mine immediately called me to tell me that she wanted it, it represented a dream that she had just had and which had particularly moved her. Magical, right?

OJL : Last question. You definitely have friends who are doing amazing things ! If you want to promote them a little, now is the time !
Marjorie : Not with the same techniques as me but sharing the same love for nature. Some I know in real life, then the lovely people I met on Instagram. Here are three of them :
_ Marie Fresne: writer of the book “The Heirs of Avalon” : https://www.instagram.com/loreilledubarde/
_ “The roots of Sabines”: between roots and pareidolia : https://www.instagram.com/lesracinesdesabine/
And
_ “On Véro’s workbench”: wood sculptures : https://www.instagram.com/sur_letabli_de_vero/

OJL : Bravo for what you do. May Our Lady protects you.
Marjorie : Thank you.
