Behind  » Katsu Booh  » we find Céline. Céline lives in Arpajon in the Parisian region. She practices the linocutting who is relief engraving process. She uses this technic in a style fantasy and medieval. In life, her passions are history, medieval art & all the universe around the fantasy.

OJL : Hello Céline
Céline : Hello.

OJL : Four quick questions before getting to the heart of the matter.
As you live in Arpajon, can you tell us what your favorite café is there? And what do you like to eat there?
Céline : Arpajon is a small town. However, a short time ago, a “Colombus Café” has open. And the foodie that I am loves there is there “Macchiato” (laughs).

OJL : And what is your favorite park or place in Arpajon?
Céline : I have a little dog, a dwarf spitz, his name is “ Drogo ”. We often go for a picnic in a park in the next town. It is in the middle of the woods and crossed by the Orge. The place is really pretty and very quiet. It’s a bubble of oxygen!

OJL : Next, what was the last book you read? And the last song you listened to?
Céline : _About the book : I tackled, a while ago, the saga of “The Witcher” by Andrzej Sapkowski . I finished the third volume. I have four left to complete the series. I’m a complete fan of this universe.
_About the music, the last song on my playlist is “Taro” by Alt-J . It’s a pretty sad song. When I work, I like to immerse myself in the soundtracks of : some movies, some TV shows or even in some folklores musics.

OJL : Finally, do you have a quote and/or proverb that you like?
Céline : “Make your life a dream. And a dream, a reality”.

OJL : Let’s talk a little about you now. How could you introduce yourself?
Céline : I am fascinated by the elders techniques. Engraving of course and the stained glass. I love the universes of the Middle Ages, the  fantasy and the mysterious stories. I am not born in the good era (laughs) !
I have also traveled extensively. I have the habit of going away for one month, in a different country, every year since I was 20. I am 42, so it is starting to be a lot (laughs) !

OJL : Who are the artists who inspire you? Who motivates you?
Céline : There is one who stands out. It is the famous Albrecht Dürer. For those who don’t yet know him, he is a German artist from the 15th century. His engravings are just sublimes…

OJL : How did you choose your pseudonym?
Céline : So of course, I was looking for something original… Initially, I was looking for a first name with a Japanese sound. And Katsuko appealed to me. The seal or signature in Japan is called an inkan or hanko . It is also used in linocut. Hence the link with Japan. And I absolutely wanted a compound name. After many days of tortures and of twisting many words in every directions… the revelation finally came ! A candle placed in front of me during a Halloween evening with a little ghost on which was marked… BOOH! And There you go ! Katsu Booh was born (laughs) !

OJL : Excellent story. If you would like, let’s talk a little about your work now?
Céline : I draw a lot of inspiration from stained glass windows and scenes of life but unlike them, no light passes through, nor any color. It’s completely paradoxical because my prints are mainly in black and white. I love this contrast and the relief it gives.

OJL : Your works are original. Are you looking to give the viewer an emotion? For my part, I got chills on several occasions (laughs).
Céline : Thank you, that means a lot to me. Of course I would like my work to makes an impact, but we are not all equal when it comes to art. The history of some of my engravings are ultimately quite dark, they plunge us into a slight melancholy.

OJL : Can we place orders for you? Do you do tailor-made?
Céline : Yes of course. I am open to personalized orders after a study of the project.

OJL : Do you have a story about creating one of your products? Or one of your sales?
Céline : I don’t have any particular anecdote but I am always captivated by the result of the printing process. Sometimes I think that nothing is wrong with an engraving… and then finally the print is crazy ! This art is an emotional roller coaster (laughs) !

OJL : Incredible indeed. Last question. You definitely have friends who are doing amazing things! If you want to promote them a little, now is the time!
Céline : I would like to use this joker to highlight an artist that I follow on Instagram. Her works are “crazy”. Her pseudonym is “Le Miroir Fou” : https://www.instagram.com/lemiroirfou

OJL : Bravo for what you do. May Our Lady protects you.
Céline : Thank you.
