Behind “ The Magic of Corsets ” we find Rozenn Castel. She lives in Brest [Brittany]. She makes tailor-made corsets and wedding dresses. Hers works are ethical, eco-responsible and local. In her life, her passions are creation (sewing and painting), nature (gardening, horse riding and hiking) as well as culture (exhibitions and reading).

OJL : Hello Rozenn.
Rozenn : Hello.

OJL : Four quick questions before getting to the heart of the matter.
As you live in Brest, can you tell us what your favourite café is there ? And what do you like to drink and eat there?
Rozenn : I really like going to “ Beaj kafe ”. Their “carrot cake” and their “ kefir ” (Caucasian drink) are delicious!

OJL : And what is your favourite park or place ?
Rozenn : I have a lot of favourite places. But since I have to choose… I will say that I really like being in a small wood which is not very far from my home. There, I like to sit on the edge of a small stream. Listening to the birds, the flow of water… And the silence! (laughs).

OJL : Next, what was the last book you read ? And the last song you listened to ?
Rozenn : _About the book: “Psychopompe” by Amélie Nothomb.
_About the song: “The Loneliest” by Måneskin.

OJL : Finally, do you have a quote and/or proverb that you like ?
Rozenn : “ It is by initiating small actions that we initiate big changes ” by Pierre Rabhi.

OJL : Let’s talk a little about you now. How could you introduce yourself ?
Rozenn : I am a passionate person. It’s impossible for me to do anything without desire ! (laughs). I am very curious. And I need to channel myself into creating with my hands. I was destined to be a teacher but I changed course during my studies to do what I really wanted !

OJL : Who are the professionals who shaped you ? Who struck you down ? In a few names and why.
Rozenn : There is one in particular. It was my first artistic crush. This is Jean-Paul Gaultier. So apart. So creative…

OJL : How did you choose your pseudonym ?
Rozenn : The name of my workshop “ The Magic of Corsets ” came like that… As if it were obvious. During a “ brainstorming ” with my Love.

OJL : Let’s talk a little about your work now. What are you creating ?
Rozenn : I create custom wedding dresses and corsets. I design them here, in my workshop in Brest.

OJL : How do you work ?
Rozenn : I work with some eco-responsible materials (ecological, Oeko-Tex and local if possible). I make sure that my activity is as energy-efficient as possible. I practice zero waste. And I reuse everything that can be used.

OJL : How can you define your style ?
Rozenn : I think my creations are original. And quite eclectic. Because each client is unique !

OJL : What techniques do you use ?
Rozenn : I make my patterns by hand. Either flat or molded (technique which requires a sewing mannequin to create some volume). Then I sew with a simple “Pfaff” machine (smile).

OJL : Can we place you a personalized order ?
Rozenn : Of course ! Personalization are very interesting for me. In fact, all my customers have a different body, so I need to do some tailor-made work each time in order to fit their body shape. Each dress is a unique creation. Thinking with the client is a key to get the job done.

OJL : Can we subscribe to your newsletter ? Because social networks are a bit saturated…
Rozenn : Unfortunately no, I’m short of time…

OJL : Do you have an anecdote about the creation of one of your products ? Or one of your sales ?
Rozenn : I don’t really have any anecdotes… There were a few famous people who came to create their corsets or dresses at the workshop. Otherwise, a few years ago, I created an underbust corset with a really thin waistline (35cm) for someone who practices tight-lacing (waist reduction).

OJL : Last question. You definitely have friends who are doing amazing things ! If you want to promote them a little, now is the time !
Rozenn : I would like to use this opportunity to introduce your readers to the work of a photographer that I like : Victoria K.

OJL : Bravo for what you do. May Our Lady protects you.
Rozenn : Thank you.
